Alongside her work in education and research, Sabitha Rahim has been deeply engaged in the performing arts, particularly in adapting and staging classical theatre for contemporary audiences. Over the years, she has written, directed, and produced five full-length stage productions, bringing together literature, music, and visual storytelling. Her work involves not only script adaptation and direction, but also original musical composition, lyric writing, costume design, and stage production. Sabitha has a particular interest in making classical literature accessible and engaging for modern audiences. She has adapted and staged works inspired by Shakespearean tragedy and historical narratives, guiding student performers through complex literary themes while transforming them into compelling theatrical experiences.
Among the productions she has directed are stage adaptations of:
- King Lear
- The Merchant of Venice
- Romeo and Juliet
- Doctor Faustus
- Sons of Babur
These productions were staged at leading institutions including Delhi Public School, Jeddah and the International Indian School, Jeddah, where Sabitha worked closely with young performers to bring classic literature to life through theatre.
One of her most ambitious productions was “Voyage to Freedom,” staged in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in Jeddah. The production depicted the story of India’s struggle for independence, beginning with the arrival of the East India Company at Surat aboard the historic ship Hector. For the production, Sabitha designed a large stage prop representing the ship, which was constructed and brought onto the stage as a central visual element of the performance. In addition to directing and writing, Sabitha composed music for the productions and performed live keyboard accompaniment during the performances, creating a fully integrated theatrical experience. Her creative work reflects her belief that education, literature, music, and storytelling are deeply interconnected, and that theatre can be a powerful medium for bringing historical and literary narratives alive for new generations.
